Skiing and snowboarding are popular family sports in Grundarfjörður. The Snæfellsnes ski area is located above the Grundarfjörður Primary School.

Enthusiasts from the Grundarfjörður Youth Association set up a 600-meter lift, built a ski lodge and bought snowmobiles in the 1980s. Today, the younger generation takes care of any renovations and maintenance of the equipment on a voluntary basis, with the help of the town’s people and the financial support of the public.
